AI Engineer - Intern
EngineeringInternshipRemote / San Diego, CA
You will turn mathematical complex equations into production models, build agentic flows, and ship features across healthcare, finance, and engineering. If you want breadth across multiple industries instead of a single product, this role gives you that scope.
What You'll Do
- Translate mathematical frameworks into trainable modules in PyTorch or JAX
- Design and compose multi-model systems
- Build and evaluate agentic workflows with tools, memory, and routing
- Implement inference services behind clean APIs. Add metrics and logging for experiments
- Own data work from day one
Data Work
- Extract data from external sources and build simple ETL jobs
- Clean and validate datasets with automated checks for schema drift, null spikes, range anomalies, and duplicates
- Handle sparse and missing data with imputation. Add missingness indicators and document tradeoffs
- Keep lightweight data docs and reproducible samples for debugging
How You Work
- This role requires independence. You identify problems, research options, make technical decisions, and execute without constant direction
- We give context and feedback. You drive the work forward
What We're Looking For
- Strong math: linear algebra, probability, optimization, statistics and Bayesian methods
- You have deployed at least one AI model or feature and understand the gap between a notebook and production
- Proficient with AI code assistants like Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini, or Claude Code. You iterate quickly when building features or debugging
- Experience with agentic flows
- Data skills: ETL basics, cleaning, and sparse data handling
- Basic MLOps: containers, cloud, and experiment tracking
Nice to Have
- RAG systems and vector databases
- Fine-tuning or preference tuning
- ONNX or TensorRT for faster inference
- Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) for building tool integrations and context sharing between AI systems
- Industry context: MIMIC or HIPAA in healthcare, SOC 2 in finance
- Open source contributions or a portfolio that shows depth
Critical Traits
- Self-motivation and time management
- You try multiple approaches before asking for help
- You can work independently for long stretches and still communicate clearly
What You'll Get
- Real ownership across multiple domains
- Autonomy to make technical decisions and shape solutions
- Experience that transfers across industries
Location and Details
- Location: remote or San Diego preferred
- Hours: 15 to 25 per week during term, 40 in summer
- You must be legally authorized to work in the United States
